The weather forecast for today was showers and it did not disappoint. Luckily it was not too cold so we actually rode along with our wet weather gear on, cool by comfortable. We left with no great expectations and within 30 minutes we found an outdoor store that sold wool t-shirts just like our Icebreaker ones but $30, a great little town with their Saturday market in full swing and discovered that the Saumur region is famous for it's caves. The caves they dig into the side of the hills that are on either side of the river and initially they dug them for the rock for building but now they use them to grow mushrooms and to age wine.
The Saumur market
We bought yummy Olives and tapenade
What surpised us the most about Saumur was the buildings in the caves and the Loire a Velo actually took us through some, very cool indeed.
This the actual cycle route
Yep, had to ride into that entrance
After Saumur it was back to the usual stunning French countryside
Came across these people playing with old boats. Looked like some sort of re-enactment??
Once we left distractions Saumur (which took until 11am to get out of) we got onto a nice flat road and we both felt great so put in swapping turns at each km marker. The rest of the ride was just awesome and we enjoyed the riding so much we forgot to take anymore photos......sorry.
We got in Luyer which is another gorgeous village and are staying in a 3 star campground. The only let down is that we have to pay for the WiFi :(
I also put on the chains we bought the other day. The old chains could probably have last alot longer but I figure it's easier to buy chains than Rohloff sprockets.
We went into the village after setting up camp, found a bar and had a beer then came back to cook dinner. Not a bad life we lead :)
