This morning after a little pep talk we got on our bikes with nerves of steel and a sheer determination to face the traffic. We were heading to Krk and unfortunately we had to get on the main road to get there. When I say main road I'm referring to a primary road not the autobahn that virtually runs adjacent to it. Despite this wonderfully big autobahn, the primary road is still heavily traffic with trucks, coaches with all and sundry. Our nerves of steel lasted all of 5 seconds as we found ourselves, white knuckled, staking a claim on our piece of bitumen and just, well hoping for the best. It was mostly downhill with rugged hills on one side and at times a sheer drop on the other with a metal barrier in between - I think there was a picturesque village down below but I was too busy holding claim to my bit of the road to notice. Half way down we pulled over to let the traffic pass and have a quiet moment to ourselves.
There also happened to be a coach load of tourists at our stop taking in the scenery and we were sorely tempted to bump a couple of the cliff along with the bikes and take their place on the coach. At the bottom of the hill we pulled over again to have cup of coffee to calm the nerves (?????), we still had another kilometre or so of the busy road before we reached a quieter road we could go on.
While having our coffee Gary found a backroad on the GPS that would get us to where we were going. Knowing full well there would be a stinking big hill involved anything was better than what we had just done.
We made our way through a lovely village, Kraljevic, lots of ups and downs and got to the bridge that would take us over to Krk. We were both nervous about the bridge because a) the traffic and b) it was a bloody long way down to the water.
However we made it across without incident and headed down the next minor road towards the water. In amongst a small village we found a lovely quiet spot for a picnic lunch and a swim.
A little further down the track we found a tourist office and went in to find out what the go was with ferries and campgrounds. I'm glad we did as we discovered some campgrounds cater for the nudists and others for, well people who like to keep their clothes on. But in saying that I have felt a little overdressed on the beach in my tankini as all other bathers are in a bikini at most or just topless – Gary is liking the beach more and more. Today was a relatively short day, not because we couldn't ride but we thought we spend the afternoon on the beach.
